If careful safety measurements and regulations aren’t followed in the process of installing electricity, there are two major hazards:
- Electric Shock
- Arc Flash
Each of these has severe consequences for health. Thankfully, these are incredibly rare, but strict and detailed adherence to regulations is needed.
On the flip side, as a consumer, electrical safety and wiring regulations ensure your safety as you use your garden room. Safe installation reduces the risks of electrical shocks, fires and damage to your new garden room.
So, what standards and regulations do we follow to keep our staff and you safe?
Electrical Safety Standards for Garden Rooms
It won’t come as a surprise to you that several regulations govern working with electrical installations and the standards they need to meet for your safety. The good news is they don’t just cover your main house but also any building or structure, meaning your garden room will meet the same electrical safety standards as your home will.
One of the key regulations we work to is Part P of the Building Regulations, which applies to garden rooms and outbuildings.
The basics of this part of Building Regulations are that any electrical installations must be designed and installed to prevent fire risks and electric shocks.
What does this mean for you?
There are several things this means for you.
- Our work must comply with Building Regulations, which are there to keep you safe in the long run of using the space. It also means we are held accountable to the standards to ensure this.
- All work on circuits connected to the main fuse board must be certified and signed off by a qualified professional.
- Local authorities may require notification of electrical work, particularly if it involves a new circuit or a connection to the main household supply – we will deal with this if necessary for your project.
To ensure we meet safety and efficiency requirements, there are several key safety measures:
- Circuit Protection (Consumer Unit & RCDs) – a dedicated circuit for the garden room should be installed, connected to the main consumer unit, along with a Residual Current Device (RCD) to prevent electric shocks by cutting off power in case of faults.
- Correct Cabling for Outdoor Use – armoured cables (SWA cables) should be used for underground wiring to prevent damage and exposure, and IP-rated (Ingress Protection) outdoor sockets are recommended for weatherproofing.
- Earthing & Bonding – proper earthing ensures that if there is a fault, electricity is safely diverted into the ground instead of causing harm, and equipotential bonding may be put in place to prevent electric shocks in metal-structured garden rooms.
Wiring Regulations for Garden Rooms
Electrical safety isn’t just about the flow of electricity, it also covers the wiring that supplies the energy.
Several UK wiring regulations also need to be followed to ensure safety, reliability, and compliance with the law.
Wiring is a crucial element to any garden room as it powers the space for the many uses it can provide. But this means it must be robust enough to handle different power needs while being protected from external factors such as moisture, temperature changes, and potential physical damage.
This is why we must meet the following approved wiring methods:
- Armoured Cables – power must travel outdoors to reach our garden rooms, so we must use cables that are highly durable, weatherproof, and resistant to physical damage.
- These cables must be buried at least 450mm deep and protected with warning tape to prevent accidental digging.
- If they aren’t going underground, they need to be secured to walls or fencing with proper fixings to prevent sagging.
- Dedicated Circuit from the Consumer Unit – as mentioned above, there must be a dedicated circuit board in your garden room so that the space operates separately from your main house’s circuit.
- This must include a circuit breaker for easy isolation.
- Plus, if high-power appliances are being used in the space, a separate distribution board (mini consumer unit) is likely to be required.
- Outdoor-Rated Connections & Waterproof Components – if components are sitting on the outside of the building, they need to be weatherproof.
- Electrical fittings, such as sockets, switches, and light fittings, must be IP-rated (Ingress Protection) for outdoor or damp environments (e.g., IP65 for outdoor sockets).
- Any external connections should be housed in weatherproof enclosures to protect against rain, dust, and temperature fluctuations.
On top of these, we will also work with you to determine the power needs of the space so that the systems we install provide the right amount of power. This will prevent overloading, flickering lights, and tripped circuits while enjoying the space.
Finally, all our garden rooms will be fitted with a Residual Current Device (RCD) that will cut off power automatically if it detects an electrical fault or leakage, keeping you and your space safe.
